Are we the only ones who thinks the new Rycote Cyclone looks like a Led Zeppelin album cover? OK, so its just us! You could come along to our Open Day and tell us what you think. More importantly though, you could learn a great deal about it from Technical Academy Award winner, Chris Woolf. The Cyclone is a radically new design of windshield from Rycote. Moving on from the classic fur-covered tube, it uses a bespoke material - 3D-tex - to give a more consistent suppression of wind noise. Chris Woolf, Technical Academy Award Winner, explains the science behind the revolutionary technology. Chris Woolf has been Rycote’s technical consultant for all things audio since 1997. What he doesn’t know about windjammers isn’t worth knowing. He picked up the Technical Academy Award in 1999 on behalf of Rycote for the design of the Modular Suspension System. The new material has excellent sound transparency but demands both a new shape and a new construction technique. Rycote is renowned for understanding how users have to work in the field, so the Cyclone also incorporates a novel basket suspension to minimise handling noise, and uniquely, does this while giving complete and immediate access to the microphone. With its self-building magnetic assembly, the Cyclone is the most highly engineered microphone windshield to date, and provides an entirely new level of both convenience and performance.
