Are we to be perfect? As many, therefore, as are perfect--let us think this, and if in anything ye think otherwise, this also shall God reveal to you, but to what we have come--by the same rule walk, the same thing think; (Philippians 3:15-16 YLT) Is Paul saying we all need to grow into maturity as Believers? NO! Is he being sarcastic towards those that think or claim they have matured to a level of spiritual attainment above others? Probably! Is he insinuating that we grow in or even towards sinless perfection in our lives? NO! He is exhorting us, as Believers, to know we are perfect τέλειος (teleios) - brought to its end; wanting nothing necessary to completeness (Thayer). We begin our journey as Believers from the finish line. Every Believer has ALL of the attributes of God indwelling them from the moment of receiving salvation! Paul had plainly pointed out that trying to obey the law (Ten Commandants) was spiritual immaturity and fully accepting the gift of the Spirit is being perfect mature! He recognizes that each of us are at different stages of development in our understanding of WHO we have become IN the anointing, WHAT we have been given BY the anointing and HOW we are to BE the anointing to exemplify the life of The Anointed One in this world. All Believers have been given the same Spirit in the same amount! Even tho we generally agree we may differ on isolated points, but Holy Spirit will lead each of us to the truth if we are willing to open our minds and listen (obey). We only have to remain faithful in as much as we have been given and not become lax in our pursuit of being conformed to the image of Jesus. Love, joy and peace in the fullness of grace!
