Are you buying it? The IRS claims that losing potentially incriminating emails is not all that unusual at the IRS. In other words, regarding data loss, well, shit happens. I wont even touch on whether this is standard government incompetence or a contrived political atrocity. But consider these points: 1) This is the same IRS that manages your financial data for tax purposes. 2) This is the same IRS that requires YOU to keep accurate records back to the beginning of time, under penalty of law. 3) But most importantly, it is a great barometer of American virtue. Imagine, in 1972 a similar (but much less important) situation led to a national outcry and the resignation of a president. In fact, it was so important that it warranted a Robert Redford movie. Todays story barely gets a whimper from the press or the public. We get more coverage of dogs on car roofs or free cell phones than we do of massive abuse of power by the most powerful non-elected bureaucracy in the country. Have we become so accustomed to political wrongdoing that we now take such actions as normal? Or have we become so divided that our politics are now more important than our conscience? Either way, its not good...
