Are you eating enough? Given the direct relationship between muscle size and muscle force output, failure to improve in either area is limiting to progress. How could an insufficient caloric intake possibly impact this relationship? Unless you are an overweight/obese, or relatively untrained individual – increasing muscle size during a caloric deficit is not likely (Demling, 2000; Donelly et al, 1983). Individuals training to get stronger should seek increases in muscle mass. Inadequate caloric intake is not advisable for this cause, at least when ignoring neural factors. Set long-term goals for yourself, and set short-term goals as steps to get you to your long-term ones. If you are just starting off in physique sport and aspire to be a professional five years from now. Or if you are just starting off in powerlifting and aspire to hit a 400 wilks in two years. You may want to reconsider that summer-time cut, or two weight class drop as a means to get you there. A more reasonable and purposeful approach is warranted. - Coach Jason and Andrew
