Are you having trouble telling the difference between lichen, moss and fungi? Do you know how theyre similar, where they overlap and how theyre different? Join the Illinois Mycological Association for Lecture: The fascinating world of lichens with Steve Leavitt this Monday, August 4th, 7:30 p.m. at Kendall College... FREE public event! npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2014/08/02/337094266/guess-who-s-been-waiting-in-the-lobby-for-a-hundred-million-years # # # Hello fungo-philes. For our August meeting we will learn about the fascinating world of lichens from Steve Leavitt PhD. Steve Leavitt studies one of the worlds most common but overlooked symbiotic systems, lichens. Using DNA analysis he explores the hidden world of lichen evolution. Lecture Title: Lichens and what they can tell us about symbioses and ecosystem health Description: Lichens are widespread members of most habitats. While lichens represent an iconic example of symbiosis, understanding the interactions among lichen partners can be hindered by uncertain species boundaries or their identities. Improving species discovery and identification in both the fungal and algal partners can enhance our perspective on lichen symbioses, the importance of unrecognized diversity, and the role ecology and geography in structuring symbiotic relationships. Furthermore, lichens communities respond to a wide array of disturbances and can provide crucial insight into ecological health. fieldmuseum.org/explore/multimedia/video-leavitts-lichens
