Are you in love with someone other than your spouse? Are you unable to commit to your marriage because of a memory? Is thinking about someone else the same as ‘cheating’ on your spouse? Do you constantly think about them? Are you always comparing the two? Is your spouse paying for your mistake? Emotional infidelity is an extremely difficult subject to talk about – and one that many find taboo because of the nature of the problem. It can happen to anyone at anytime – you could be married or about to marry. You could have met someone in your past, or you may have met someone whilst married and then found you can’t stop thinking about them. So what exactly constitutes halal and haram in this instance? Is it ever ok to be ‘just friends’ with members of the opposite gender and keep in touch with them? And what exactly are the long term implications of such ‘emotional affairs?’
