Are you kidding me!! Tying funding for pre-k to antiquated, lobbyist $$-tied state performance measures/outcomes is the worst possible stance any candidate could take if they wanted to truly help our kids in most of the State. There is soooooo much data showing that early childhood education and development leads to a more successful education experience from K-12 (resulting in less $$ spent for remediation later) & increased % of high school completion (reducing the drop out rate, increasing the # of skilled workers = better economic development opportunities to recruit companies in rural communities (RGV), and more college-ready students for those who chose to continue). The $ spent on remediation for students by school districts (ie local taxpayers, state & federal funding) is astronomical; to truly cut costs, invest in a STRONG FOUNDATION for more FUTURE SUCCESSES. To add insult to injury, this candidate made this statement in Weslaco, TX, a predominately Hispanic, English-2nd language community, the exact student which would benefit from early intervention & where working/middle-class parents cannot afford private preschool. Sounds like he completely understands our regions educational issues and economic needs. #RGVeducation
