Are you ready for your superhero casting roundup for the week? Earlier this week, casting news surfaced online for DC’s Aquaman as well as the upcoming Marvel releases Doctor Strange and X-Men: Apocalypse. Here is the latest on who is being cast in what. AQUAMAN-This week is was announced Karl Urban (Star Trek, Judge Dredd) is being sought to play the bad guy to the King of the Seven Seas. It was reported last year that Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) has been cast as the hero of the waters in a four-picture deal that will include at least two Justice League films. Now in a new turn of events, Warner Bros. is looking towards a standalone picture that would feature Aquaman and a nemesis of his own. Talk of an Aquaman movie has been around for some time now since the television show Entourage parodied the superhero blockbuster with a fake Aquaman film directed by James Cameron. Although such a high profile director may not be attached to direct, Warner Bros. has a few ideas of who should helm the first movie for the aquatic superhero. According to reports, Noam Murro (300: Rise of an Empire) may take on the project. With the gritty texture of the 300 films and Momoa attached to star, viewers may be in for a much darker movie than anticipated. This darker perspective leaves everyone wondering who could be the villain for the first movie. Karl Urban, who is known for getting down and dirty in movies such as Judge Dredd, should be a worthy adversary for Momoa’s Aquaman. Fans will have to wait and see who he will be picked to play if the rumors of his casting turn out to be true. Black Manta, perhaps? DOCTOR STRANGE-In other news on the superhero front, Marvel has been searching for another leading role for the upcoming Doctor Strange. Chiwetel Ejiofor may have just landed a new role of a lifetime after his Oscar-nominated turn in 12 Years a Slave. Rumor has it that Ejiofor’s part will have a significant amount of screen time next to Benedict Cumberbatch, who has been cast as the lead hero. Many rumored casting decisions have come and gone with Doctor Strange but the only solid decision has been Cumberbatch’s role thus far. At different points, different stars have been attached to possibly play The Ancient One. Those stars have included Morgan Freeman, Ken Watanabe and Bill Nighy. So far none have been confirmed. With the recent news of Ejiofor circling a role, he could be up to play the same part. There is also the possibility that Ejiofor could be playing the lead villainous role, which has yet to be confirmed. Whether he will be on the side of Doctor Strange or pitted against him, Ejiofor could work well with Cumberbatch, who is up for his own Oscar this year in The Imitation Game. Look for more updates on his involvement as the news becomes available. X-MEN / APOCALYPSE -Two weeks ago we reported that a whole slew of young stars were up for the parts of the younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse. Today we can confirm that the roles have been filled. From the looks of things, the latest X-Men film is shaping up to be another special addition to the series. Director Bryan Singer announced via Twitter that Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner will be playing the younger version of Jean Grey. She will be joined by Tye Sheridan (Mud, Joe) who will play Cyclops, Jean’s known love interest in the series, as well as Alexandra Shipp (Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B), who will take on the role of Storm. All three young actors were among the many stars reported to be on the list of possible candidates for the roles. The film will begin shooting this summer with the new cast in attendance. The movie is set during the ‘80s when the ancient mutant Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) introduces a new threat to the class of developing heroes. pastemagazine/articles/2015/01/casting-news-for-aquaman-doctor-strange-and-x-men.html
