Aregbesola, A Source of Hope for Nigeria - Gen. Adeyinka... FRSC rates Osun best on road safety and Security Former Governor of Old Western Region of Nigeria, General Adeyinka Adebayo (rtd) on Friday said the style of governance being adopted by Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun remains a major source of hope in the face of the weak and bleak future that the Yoruba race and Nigeria face Adeyinka, an elder statesman, who visited Aregbesola at the Government House, Osogbo, told the Governor that the current state of the country required urgent attention for the restoration of its past achievements and lost glory. This was just as the Elder statesman commended the governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for his active participation in the Regional integration of the Yoruba Nation. General Adebayo charged Aregbesola to continue to lead the initiative on the regional integration agenda of the Yoruba race which he described as one of the cardinal objectives of the Yoruba Council of Elders headed by him. According to him, "My aim then and now is to have the best for Nigeria and Yoruba especially. Our problem now is where we are going in this country and what our position is as Yoruba. That is why we need to commend your positions on where the Yoruba people should be now and in the future. "The future is bleak, but we want it to be bright. It is based on that we thank you for what you are doing in Osun. We use the little money we get unnecessarily. We should go back to where we are in terms of regional structure so that the little we get will be used for our people," the General noted. He condemned what he described as costly governance structure in the country, describing it as wasteful just as he urged governments bring down the cost of governance. Gen. Adebayo held that the problem confronting the Yoruba race and the Country at large is the situation between now and the elections of 2015, saying 2015 will decide where Nigeria is going. In his response, Aregbesola thanked the former military governor for his labour of love and patriotism, "We want to assure you that we are committed to the things you have told us on the belief of YCE which is the commitment to the progress of the Yoruba race and that of Nigeria." The governor who admitted that the architecture of governance in Nigeria is too expensive said what should be the genuine interest of Yoruba should be integration of states with similarities to reduce the high cost of governance. In his words, "No Nigerian can really exist without an ethnic base. We also want to admit that between now and 2015 is crucial. We will do everything to ensure that we do not make mistakes." Aregbesola stressed. The General was later presented with gifts comprising the Osun flags, Crest and cultural calendar as marks of his visit. *** FRSC rates Osun best on road safety and Security The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has adjudged the Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola the best governor who takes safety and security of lives as his greatest concern. The Chairman of the FRSC Technical Committee in the state, Professor Joseph Fawole spoke in Osogbo, the state capital on Thursday during a courtesy visit on the governor by the FRSC officials from Abuja. The officials were in the state for the 2012 annual rating of the state efforts at reducing road carnage. According to him, the massive road infrastructure development across the state embarked upon by the state government has gone a long way in checking the high rate of road accident in the state. Accompanied by the state Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Imoh Etuk and other members of the committee, Fawole added that the effort of the government in the reduction of road accident has actually assisted the FRSC in the control of accidents. He said: "What we are seeing currently in Osun is that you have brought safety into the lives of all and sundry. It is no gainsaying that you have exemplarily demonstrated the serious role of being your brothers’ keeper. "You made us proud sometimes ago when we heard over the news that you personally engaged in the rescue operation of accident victims. "The number of ambulances which you stationed at different locations of the state and the road network in all the six zones of the state, place you above other governors in prudent spending and love for your citizens", he added. Responding, the governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, said that it is noteworthy that the FRSC has recognised the good work of the government, especially on road infrastructure development. He said that the efforts of the government are based on its concern for the lives of the people, which he described as sacred and irreplaceable, adding that that was why the government revived rail service by signing an agreement with the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Oyetola added that the government has been complementing the efforts of the FRSC in many ways, which is why the administration put together the traffic marshal to enforce traffic laws. He then promised that the administration would not relent in its efforts at ensuring that people do not lose their lives to road crash unnecessarily. —
