Argentine Opens getting more competitive For years the finals of Argentina’s highest rated tournaments (the Tortugas Open, the Hurlingham Open and the Argentine Open) were monopolized by the country’s top two teams, recently those two teams had been Ellerstina and La Dolfina. Last year Alegria team broke through the ranks, upset Ellerstina, 19-15, earning the right to face La Dolfina in the final of the Argentine Open. Although La Dolfina won, 16-11, the score was all even at 8-8 at the end of the first half. More importantly it proved that there are some talented teams that can compete with the “big boys”. This year Alegria (Polito Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Lucas Monteverde and Alfredo Cappella Barabucci) is back (currently playing at 35-goals without 9-goal team captain Fred Mannix-broken finger) and another high-goal entry, 35-goal La Aguada (Facundo Sola, Guillermo Caset Jr., Miguel Novillo Astrada and Ignacio Novillo Astrada) is pressing for center stage with impressive firepower coming with the help of Sapo Caset. Saturday afternoon’s Hurlingham semifinal game between La Dolfina and Alegria will be a test to see just how far Alegria has come over the years while the showdown between La Aguada and Ellerstina will have to wait until Sunday’s second semifinal. The exciting aspect of this year’s Hurlingham Open might be the fact that there are stronger second tier teams competing with the outcomes of the tournament semifinals no longer a foregone conclusion.
