Arizona! I love you. Here are a few reasons I love living in AZ, especially in a rural community. 1. AZ has its own time zone. 2. The mountains and desert vistas changes dramatically with cloud cover. It looks like the mountains are forever moving. 3. You can see it rain 10, 20, 30+ km away in every direction while the sun is out. 4. AZ uses metrics so a commute is even shorter than expected. 5. There is no traffic, I repeat, there is no traffic. I have to travel 33 km to see a stop light. 6. The speed limit is 75 mph on the highway. Need I say more? 7. I have a 12 minute commute, and carpool. 8. The people are genuinely accepting, loving, helpful, funny, artistic, and very chill. 9. Living is inexpensive and especially good for broke artists and teachers. 10. “Clean out your desk” means we are meeting for drinks. 11. People tend to speak their mind without fear of offending anyone. It’s refreshing. 12. Children here are naturally caring and innocent. They do things like ranching, gardening, canning, and rock climbing. I have yet to hear a popular video game as a hobby. 13. Vitamin C is chocolate. Go Aztecs! 14. Everyone here is bilingual in varying degrees, and many are multi-lingual. I love to hear a person switch seamlessly from one language to another, especially at the Chinese buffet. 15. People you have just met will hug you warmly. Some of them will kiss you and tell you they love you the next time you meet. 16. Monsoon storms are insane poetry. 17. There are Classical Liberals camping out as Republicans and Libertarians (more on that later). 18. There are no billboards or fast food restaurants in Rio Rico, just people and their families and businesses with a warm smile and a welcome. Aurora at Garrett’s Supermarket asked me if I needed ice today. The fact she remembered that I didnt have an ice maker is incredible. 19. Ancient wisdom is practiced here. Respecting traditions with a blanket of art and music strikes me fantastic. 20. The elevation is high and there are no street lights. The constellations are vivid to the naked eye early in the evening. 21. I have time to write, paint, and Montessori, and am inspired by amazing people who value time as an asset to individualism and the love of family and community.
