Armed Robbers raid in Lagos, Police refuse to respond to phonecalls A 14-man robbery gang raided four communities in Amikanle, a suburb of Lagos State for three hours at the weekend without being challenged by the police. During the raid, the robbers killed a guard, shot some victims and also carted away phones, cash and other valuables. The injured victims are receiving treatment at various hospitals. The communities raided are Amikanle, Ogundare, Alaso Estate and Okeabiye all in Command, Alagbado. According to the secretary of the Community Development Association, CDA, Pastor Joel Agbebi, the robbers arrived the area around 1:30 a.m. and split themselves into two groups of eight and six. Agbebi also said that all the robbers wore masks and on sighting the guards in the communities, the robbers opened fire on them, killing Wasiu Olatoye, while Ibraheem Kazeem was shot on his left hand. He said the robbers told their victims that they were okada (commercial motorcycle) riders in the community which was why they wore masks to conceal their identities. One of the victims, Bimbo Kayode, said that the robbers broke into her apartment through the window by using sledge hammers. “I was sleeping when they broke in around 2 a.m. and immediately the robbers gained entrance into my apartment, they demanded for money, laptop and the brown purse I use to sell recharge cards. “When I did not answer them on time they threatened to shoot my daughter in the leg if I don’t cooperate with them.” She said what the robbers took away from her were worth N70,000. Another victim, Mr Mike Sunday, who said he lost his four phones, HP laptop worth N120,000, added that he was upstairs when the robbers invaded their apartment. He said while the robbers were attacking the first victim, he quickly kept N10,000 for them. “I saw the thieves when they came into my neighbour’s apartment because someone had already phoned me that robbers were around. “When they came in and they demanded for money, I quickly gave them the N10,000 I had kept for them. They gave me a dirty slap and said how could I, a civil engineer give them only N10,000? “Before they left, they collected over N250,000 I had with me.” A petty trader, Memuna Yussuf, said when the robbers came into her apartment, they emptied her purse and took away all she had. When P.M.NEWS contacted Merit Hospital in Alagbado where one of the shot security guards, Ibraheem Kazeem, was rushed to, the doctors said they were able to save his life. “The victim has been transferred to the General Hospital in Ikeja where17 pellets were removed from his hand. We were able to save his life despite the sudden swelling of his hand,” the hospital source said. When the DPO from Alagbado Police Station, DSP Musa Alimi visited the affected communities and was blaming the victims for not calling on the police in time, the victims showed him the number they were calling when the robbers attacked them. And when they tried to confirm the number, it happened to be one of the officers that came with the DPO. As at the time of filing this report, the victims were still awaiting the action the DPO would take against the policeman who refuse to respond to the phone calls by the victims.
