Army Football rolled into Winston Salem on a gorgeous September day for a rumble with the Deamon Deacons of Wake Forest. Unfortunately, penalties and mental mistakes returned to torment the Army Team as they managed to squander a game in which they held all the momentum. The Deamon Deacons drew first blood in the first quarter when they capped off a 6-play, 74-yard drive with a 15-yard scamper by running back Isaiah Robinson. But Army roared back and tied the game with 49 seconds left in the quarter when fullback Larry Dixon powered his way in from the five yard line to complete a 8-play, 76-yard drive. It didnt take long for Wake to regain the lead when they capitalized on a botched Army onside kickoff to drive the short field in 5 plays. Quarterback John Wolford connected with his wide receiver C. Serigne for 6 yards. After that the rest of the first half was all Army. Quarterback Angel Santiago plunged in from the one to finish another 8-play drive - this one covering 74 yards. Then after forcing a Wake Forest turnover on downs, the Army Team marched 68 yards in 9 plays, with the touchdown coming on an option pass from Joe Walker to Raymond Maples with 2:23 left in the half. On Wakes next drive, linebacker Jeremy Timpf intercepted a tipped pass to put Army back in scoring position. However, Armys field goal attempt as time expired in the half was no good and the score remained Army 21, Wake 14. But the second half proved disastrous for Army. The defense repeatedly forced Wake to punt but Armys offense continually sabotaged their ensuing drives with false starts and holding penalties. They did get the ball inside the Wake 20 in the 3rd quarter but fumbled a pitch on third down, which was recovered by the Deamon Deacons. The third quarter was the only scoreless fifteen minutes of the game. But it didnt take Wake long to score in the fourth. Mike Weaver connected on a 15-yard field goal just 47 seconds into the quarter. After forcing an Army punt, Wake proceeded to drive 84 yards on 11 plays to take the lead. Two pass interference penalties proved devastating to Army, as they both came on third down and kept the drive alive. With 6:45 remaining in the game, the Demon Deacons took the lead on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Wolford to wide receiver E.J. Scott. Army proved to be their own worst enemy on the ensuing possession. After driving into Wake territory they were faced with a third down. Angel Santiago appeard to have the yardage to convert but a chop-block penalty negated the run. On the following third and long play with about 3 minutes remaining, Wake recovered a Santiago fumble. From there, Wake converted a first down and then ran the clock out. The final score Wake 24, Army 21. It was a gut-wrenching loss. After the game Coach Jeff Monken was clearly flustered and visibily frustrated. When asked by a reporter what Army could build on coming off of the game his immediate response was, What do we build on? We didnt do anything that well to build upon. Now it is back to the drawing board for the Army Team. This was a game in which they were clearly the better team on the field and could only blame themselves for the critical mistakes they made. Army beat Army today and Wake was the benefactor.
