Army Second Lieutenant graduates West Point near the top of his class. Suffering from depression and wanting to be in combat quicker than the Army will permit, he deserts and joins the Foreign Legion. After several years of exemplary service in that bad ass French military unit, the Second Lieutenant returns to the US Army, turns himself in, and he is tried by a court-martial. The military judge excludes the evidence of his mental health issues before the verdict, but even when it comes in for sentencing, the Second Lieutenant still gets four years along with his dismissal from the Service. Says so much about the cluelessness that we battle today, particularly with the careerism and the political pandering that arises anytime we downsize our military.
