Army and stakeholders “Bayanihan” in Panay aid Persons with Disabilities CAMP PERALTA, Jamindan, Capiz – A total of fifty-five (55) persons with disabilities (PWDs) have benefited from the “Bayanihan” efforts of the Army’s 301st Infantry Brigade and the different stakeholders in Panay. On October 5 and 6, 2014, the beneficiaries received customized wheelchairs thru Project AGUBAY at St. Anthony Abbot Parish in Tubungan, Iloilo; Mere Monique Homes in Lapaz, Iloilo City and in Cabatuan, Iloilo. Colonel Eric Uchida, Commander of Army’s 301st Infantry Bridage said that “We from the Army are not only combatants but we are also partners of the persons with disabilities by providing them services in uplifting their living conditions.” “This is part of the non traditional role of the Army as partners of the society in nation building. Let us continue the “Bayanihan” because by working together, we can do great things,” Uchida added. Project AGUBAY has been working with the differently able persons or persons with disabilities (PWDs) since last year by providing wheelchairs, artificial legs and other assistive devices. “The wheelchairs are customized base on their needs to ensure that we are helping not just the recipients but also their families,” said Sister Germelina Casaol of the Latter-Day Saints Charities. “We want to make sure that the recipients or their family can continue to earn a living or do their duties in their homes”, Sister Casaol added. Most of the beneficiaries of the mission are cerebral palsy patients, those with weak lower limbs and those who have no more chances of walking. Two (2) beneficiaries received walkers and one (1) received a cane. The Philippine Army provided military vehicles in transporting the wheelchairs from warehouse to the mission area and assisted in the distribution thru carrying the patients and fixing the wheelchairs. Project AGUBAY is in partnership with the Kaya Natin Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, Physicians for Peace Philippines, the Latter-Day Saints Charities, De La Salle Charity Rehabilitation Service, the Philippine Army’s 301st Infantry (Bayanihan) Brigade, 61st Infantry “Hunter” Battalion and the 82nd Infantry “Bantay-Laya” Battalion. Ms Aura Landar, Project Director of Kaya Natin Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership said that “Project AGUBAY is a priority project of Kaya Natin Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership here in Panay. The project is a celebration of the life and legacy of the late Sec. Jesse Robredo, one of the founders of Kaya Natin.” Meanwhile, the partnership of the Army units in Panay with the different stakeholders is in line with the guidance of MGen Rey Leonardo Guerrero, Commander of 3ID, to continue to serve selflessly and work closely with its partners and stakeholders so that social and economic issues in the community can be appropriately and swiftly addressed.
