Army organize horse race competition at Gai Dessa AJAZ RISHU. Doda, September 06: On popular demand of Gujjars and Bakkarwals who are residing in higher pastures of Dessa area alongwith their flocks, a horse race competition was organized by Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, Doda today at an altitude of 10,200 feet in the lush green meadows of Gotul. A total of 170 Gujjars & Bakkarwals horse man participated in the event which was witnessed by 330 people who had gathered from Gwadis/Blocks from the nearby area for this unique event. During the competition, all the winners were awarded cash prize sponsored by Commanding Officer, Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, Doda at an impressive award ceremony attended by all the Gujjars and Bakkarwals of the area and members of Army and Civil administration. Company Commander, Dessa Area praised the participants for showing the determination to win and also encouraged them to excel in all such events in future. The following Cash prizes were awarded to the first three candidates : - (a) First prize - Rs 5000/- (b) Second prize - Rs 3000/- (c) Third prize - Rs 1000/- (d) Individual prize - Rs 2000/- (for picking up of handkerchief while ridding) The villagers and Sarpanch were grateful to the Army for reviving the old tradition of horse race and saw it as a befitting farewell to the Gujjars and Bakkarwals at the end of summer season when they are about to migrate to the lower areas. The noble efforts of Army were highly appreciated by the local populace in Dessa area as well as by the district administration. This event has sown such of mutual trust and co-operation between Army and the turned out shepherds who are otherwise susceptible to be swaged by the propaganda of Anti National Elements and generated goodwill amongst the local populace for Army.
