Aropa Airport Finally opened: After 23 years of closure the Aropa airport was officially opened today by the Prime Minister Hon Peter ONeil and President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville Hon Chief Dr John Momis. There were mixed feelings as the day unfolded because of its history and significance. The order of the day began with Airlines PNG as the first aircraft to land carrying passengers who were mainly Aropa Landowners. The 29 Landowners were flown to Port Moresby yesterday and flown back into Aropa signifying the support , commitment and joy they had towards the reopening of the Aropa Airport . The Prime Minister Hon Peter ONeil flew in on an Airniugini Q400 to a big welcome by the waiting delegation led by the President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville Hon Dr John Momis. Also present with the Dignitaries were the were Primary School students from Kieta District dressed up in their uniforms. Prime Minister ONIEL and President MOMIS both inspected the Guard of Honor and were then carried to the stage by a cultural group from South Bougainville . The day went well as cultural groups from all over the region performed in front of the guests that were on the stage. The ceremony ended on a high note when both Government Leaders unveiled the Plaque signifying the opening of the airport and to close it off before departure back to pom, the name on the Airniugini Q400 was also unveiled and so the plane returned to Port Moresby bearing the name KIETA. That Airniugini Q400 that transported the Prime Minister and his delegation to Aropa Airport is now named KIETA.
