Arose this morning at 4:45am without an alarm. My two young - TopicsExpress

Arose this morning at 4:45am without an alarm. My two young hunters (kids) have again opted to sleep-in Saturday morning (19 Oct) rather than get in a morning hunt. Personally I love morning hunts. The trick now is to get on stand without getting busted by deer that may be out feeding during the Full Moon. My objective this morning is to put either a mature doe or a mature buck in the freezer. My observation sits earlier in the season showed me which corner of the Sanctuary-Swamp seemed to be having largest activity level. The wind is good for hunting the stand which is perhaps 50 yards away from that corner of the Sanctuary. The woods there is loaded with a mixture of oak and hickory trees. The soybeans have been harvested but there are still a few on the ground which got missed during harvest which the deer will glean. The field has been planted to winter wheat which once sprouted up an inch or two or three will make the area an attractive green field which the deer will feed on. Since the field is currently clear of crops I could damage I will swing very wide of the Sanctuary-swamp and use the topography to help hide my approach from deer in the swamp. In rolling hills that is simply a matter of walking down the valleys rather than up and over the hill tops as much as possible. This will also serve to minimize odds of bumping deer off the field which may be out gleaning soybeans from the harvested field. I will skip eating breakfast & skip my normal cup of fruit juice start to the day (no I dont drink coffee) to help stave off any need to use the restroom until after the morning hunt period is over. This will be the coolest temp morning hunt of the season and I plan to get on stand an hour or so before my start time phone alarm starts vibrating so I will don a bar of upper & lower long johns to wear under my ScentLok base layers. I will also shower first with a scent eliminating shampoo-body soap. And once geared up in ScentLok I will also spritz myself with a scent eliminating spray. I do NOT believe this will make me smell invisible nor make it so I can forget the wind - just hunt and yet get close - go undetected but rather I do believe it helps me give off substantially less scent so that if deer cut my trail or walk through the area the wind has carried my scent they may notice just a faint scent of human - as would come from the moderately nearby houses in this rural living agricultural area - rather than a stronger human scent they might detect as the present danger of a hunter nearby. For well over a month I have also NOT been using any scented products on my person with one exception - mint flavored toothpaste. I have been using Lavilin fragrance-free Roll-on deodrant which only needs to be applied every 48hrs and unlike most deodorants which merely try to clog pores and apply a strong cover scent this one actually works to prevent odor. And thats all for now because the phone alarm I woke up ahead of just informed me it is time to hit the shower - then head out to get on this long hike stand extra early for a short morning any mature deer for the freezer hunt. Happy Hunting!
