Around 1971-72 among other responsibilities as a New Haven Policeman, I drove the 3 wheel Harley-Davidson motorcycles (similiar to photo) Mine was cleaner than this one. One evening 4:00 to 12:00 shift in the summer, I was stationed in the Grand Avenue area. I decided to park on the corner of Lloyd and Grand Avenue. I was sitting there checking out traffic and pedestrian activity. I attracted the attention of 3 or 4 neighborhood boys who came over. checking out my bike. One wise ass kid commented that, He aint no cop. Hes the Good Humor man and laughed.. The other boys did not laugh. They were more respectful toward me. I had an idea. I started the Harley and drove over to the Good Humor Corp. on James and River Streets. I drove right in the garage. The night Manager Al Torello was on duty. I said hello to Al and asked for a favor. I told Al the story about the kids. He took a box of 24 toasted almond bars and even set a block of dri-ice in the rear compartment. He placed the ice cream on the dri-ice. I thanked him and drove back to Lloyd and Grand and parked in the same spot. It took awhile but finally, the same boys returned. The wise guy said, its the Good Humor man and laughed. I got off the bike and opened the rear compartment and said, boys, I only have toasted almond left, OK?. Mr. wise guy said, see, I told you guys he wasnt a real cop, man. At 12:00 PM I signed off at Station 2 and went home, never telling the other Officers what I did. I knew what would happen the next night. Well, next day at 4:00 PM, I was assigned to Lighthouse Park with my 3 wheeler. Another, mean looking cop was assigned to Grand Avenue with his 3 wheeler. The 8 hour shift went by. Checking in at midnight, we compared our nights. The mean Officer said, these little bas**ards came over to me on Grand Avenue and asked for ice cream. They said the other cop gave them ice cream last night. Where do these kids get such stupid ideas anyway? No respect. I said, got me.???
