Arrest Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf And Her Accomplices Written by Bernard Gbayee Goah President, Operation We Care for Liberia There is a need to have Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia arrested on charges of War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity, Criminal Negligence, Rampant Corruption and Obstruction of Justice. See categorized reasons below. War Crimes The evidence shows Madam Sirleaf played a central role in the planning, financing and directing of a war so brutal, so violent and so devastating that experts have labeled it one of the worst in modern History. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf aided and abetted atrocities committed by a criminal rebel group in Liberia. This is a violation of international law and ethics, as civilians were indiscriminately victimized. Ordering Charles Taylor’s NPFL rebels to bombard a densely populated city (Monrovia) resulted into mass civilians casualties. The rebels executed Madam Sirleaf’s orders, and countless amount of women and children were killed. Madam Sirleaf’s war indirectly killed thousands of internally displaced Liberians and other nationals as a result of starvation. All of this shows the extent to which Madam Sirleaf was willing to go in order to become president. In fact, based upon review of the evidence, Liberia’s Truth Commission recommended that Madam Sirleaf not hold public office for a period of 30 years. Crimes Against Humanity Civilians that were not maimed or killed by the NPFL bombings were victims of negligence and depraved indifference to human life. NPFL’s persistent bombardment of the city of Monrovia prevented relief agencies from carrying food supplies to displaced children in central Monrovia and thousands of women and children died from starvation. Ellen must be arrested and questioned for all of this! Criminal Negligence The current regime headed by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf could have prevented or reduced the magnitude of the spread of Ebola in Liberia, when her government had the chance and power to do so. But it did nothing to prevent the spread of the virus. When the government of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf was informed that the Ebola virus was in Republic of Guinea, as well as suspected to be in one of the counties in Liberia, that should have been a red flag right away! Such news clearly posed a high-degree of danger to the population of Liberia. News like that meant, EDUCATE YOUR PEOPLE about Ebola, and CLOSE ALL BOARDERS TO GUINEA until the virus is contained in the suspected area in Liberia! Now her administration’s inaction has not only endangered Liberians living in Liberia, it has also demonized Liberians residing in other countries. Rampant Corruption According to Transparency International’s 2013 Global Corruption Barometer, Liberia ranked number-one in the world meaning Liberia is the most corrupt countries on planet earth. Also, just recently, the former head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cllr. Jerome Verdier condemned President Ellen Johnson-Sirleafs administration of being corrupt. He alleged that on madam Sirleaf’s watch, corruption is rampant and capital flight is high beyond her control”. “As a consequence, inflation is high; prices of basic commodities are prohibitively expensive with corresponding decline in disposable income and falling standards of living”. The Sirleaf administration has in fact depleted the national treasury of Liberia to such an extent that there is closed to nothing left to protect. But that is not all, President Sirleaf did not restrict corruption activities to just Liberia; she in fact attempted to introduce it in a country called Malawi. This revelation become true when the government of Malawi was obliged to publically deny reports quoting President Joyce Banda that she was advised by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia not to fight corruption in Malawi during an election year. All of this happened during President Sirleaf’s three-day visit to Malawi in February 2014. Obstruction of Justice President Sirleaf’s unrestricted powers and interference in her country’s judiciary system makes it difficult for law enforcement and the courts to carry out their duties in a neutral and independent way. And that is because Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is an imperial President. She is the juror, the prosecutor and the defense attorney in all corruption cases. According to Voice of America (VOA) When Liberia’s Justice Minister, Christiana Tah resigned, she wrote a letter of resignation to the President of Liberia. In the letter, Minister Tah said she could not be the Minister of Justice of the country and not supervise the operations of the security agencies headed by one of the sons of the President. The letter cited her lack of independence to investigate allegations of fraud against the National Security Agency. Minister Tah also said it had become “unbearable” for her to continue as minister amid “the President’s determination to systemically undermine and gut the portfolio of relevance and effectiveness. Conclusion We must hold accountable those bearing the greatest responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Liberia. President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf must not be allowed to provide cover for persons who have committed unspeakable atrocities. Impunity must not trump accountability. This will make it difficult - if not impossible – to restore normalcy in post-war Liberia under the leadership of persons who are connected in any way to the senseless destruction of lives and properties in Liberia during the 15-year war. There is a need to have Madam Sirleaf and her accomplices arrested on charges of War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity, Criminal Negligence, Rampant Corruption and Obstruction of Justice. Their involvements in government impede the ability of the legal system in Liberia to function properly.
