Arrest spree of GJM leaders continues KURSEONG, 11 Aug 2013: The administration’s move to arrest Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders and activists has picked up pace since the commencement of the indefinite strike. Three GJM supporters were today arrested in Kurseong and later released on bail, while a fourth has been picked up in Kalimpong. Further, the police arrested Gorkhaland Territorial Administration member Pranay Thapa of Pankhabari Ambatay Constituency and GJM central committee member Laxman Rai in the evening. But in spite of the several detentions with the administration opening old cases against the detainees, the indefinite bandh has remained peaceful and marked by peaceful rallies and demonstration. The shutdown ended its ninth day today but the GJM has not shown any signs of calling it off. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has warned of stringent action if the GJM doesn’t withdraw the bandh within 72 hours, but Bimal Gurung instead asked her to withdraw her statement or face a “janta curfew”. Meanwhile, an all-party meeting is expected to be convened on Monday by the GJM chief to show his party is not the only one who is agitating for statehood. (EOIC)
