Arrieta sparkles again UNDATED (AP) — Jake Arrieta came within four outs of tossing the third major league no-hitter in three weeks. Arrieta held the Red Sox to one hit while striking out 10 over 7 2/3 innings as the Chicago Cubs earned a 2-0 win at Boston. Arrieta had a no-hitter until Stephen Drew hit a two-out single in the eighth. The gem came six days after he carried a perfect game into the seventh inning against Cincinnati. Arrieta is 4-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings over his last five starts. The Cubs managed just five hits but won it on a two-run single by Nate Schierholtz (SHEHR-hohltz) in the fourth inning. Elsewhere in the majors: — Detroit shocked Oakland 5-4 on Rajai (RAH-zhay) Davis grand slam in the bottom of the ninth. John Doolittle blew a 4-1 lead in the ninth as the Athletics lost for only the third time in 12 games. — Alcides (al-SEE-dehs) Escobar hit a pair of two-run doubles and Salvador Perez added a solo homer in Kansas Citys 6-1 romp at Minnesota. Danny Duffy lowered his ERA to 2.60 by holding the Twins to a run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. — Robinson Cano (kah-NOH) belted a three-run homer and James Jones went 4-for-5 in Seattles 10-4 pounding of Houston. Mike Zunino (zuh-NEE-noph) added a two-run blast and three RBIs, while teammates Michael Saunders and Brad Miller also went deep to help Taijuan (TY-wahn) Walker win his season debut. — Steve Pearce hit a pair of two-run homers after Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy hit solo shots in Baltimores 7-1 pounding of Texas. Ubaldo Jimenez (oo-BAHL-doh hih-MEHN-ehz) held the Rangers to an unearned run and four hits in eight innings. — The New York Yankees absorbed their third straight loss as Logan Forsythe singled home the tiebreaking run in the 12th inning to send Tampa Bay to a 4-3 triumph in the Bronx. Matt Joyce and Kevin Kiermaier hit solo homers for the Rays, who were two outs from a 3-2 win until Brian Roberts went deep in the bottom of the ninth. — The Dodgers lead the NL West by a half-game over San Francisco after Dan Haren combined with two relievers on a one-hitter in a 1-0 shutout of Cleveland at Los Angeles. Haren worked seven innings and surrendered one walk and Michael Bourns single, both in the third inning. — Cincinnati threw a one-hitter in San Diego, but the Padres still managed to beat the Reds 1-0 as winning pitcher Jesse Hahn scattered three hits and struck out nine in five innings. Tommy Medica provided the Padres lone hit and also scored the only run on Everth Cabreras sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. — Errors by center fielder Juan Ligares and third baseman Eric Campbell allowed the Braves to score three unearned runs in the eighth inning of a 5-3 win over the New York Mets in Atlanta. The Braves trailed 3-0 before picking up their fifth straight win and staying a half-game ahead of Washington in the NL East. — Ian Desmond hit a tiebreaking, three-run double while the Nationals scored five times in the seventh inning of a 7-3 triumph against Colorado. Bryce Harper was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in his return to the Nats lineup. — The Angels and White Sox were rained out in Chicago, forcing the two teams to play a twinbill on Tuesday.
