Arriving Groton CT to report to Sub School I was assigned a dorm - TopicsExpress

Arriving Groton CT to report to Sub School I was assigned a dorm room. I entered and introduced myself and unpacked my belongings into my gear locker. I spent the following weeks training and making new buddies. Weeks after spending time with my room mate whom I had grown to respect as he never said much in the way of bragging or self glorifying himself I began to notice his respect for the Navy and his desire to stand out just enough to not be noticed. I spent time eating breakfast with him and honoring the place setting for the ones we never forget and walking up hill to B. HALL for classes. He was a friend in the end but most of all he was my Brother sharing service in the Navy. Finally the day came for us to part ways and when I came around from locker I noticed why this man was different. He had on his uniform a beautiful gold TRIDENT. My eyes went wide as I was shocked that my service on the Abraham Lincoln and my service in San Diego as well as Treasure Island before entering Sub Training had never crossed paths with one of these rare and incredible men. I noticed him remove the TRIDENT from his uniform before we said our final words to each other and it occurred to me the privilege bestowed. I will never forget what that young man looked like but I wish I new his name. Some people meet someone famous and they never forget that moment in time. I will always appreciate the trust and respect shown by this man and thank him daily for his sacrifice to our country. Some communities are tight but none compare to the ones the Navy has to offer. This year I hope and pray for healing to myself and those that have lost someone that truly matters to them. Happy New Years to All.
