Arsenal Finalising £25.5 million Bid for William Carvalho. Arsenal are finalising a huge £25.5 million offer for Manchester United target William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon according to the reports. The Portuguese ace has been on the radar of a host of top clubs for some time now, and his reputation was enhanced after he was named as part of his countrys squad for the World Cup in Brazil. SCOUTED: Manchester United scouted him regularly while David Moyes was in charge of Old Trafford, although their interest appears to have cooled somewhat. That appears to have given Arsenal time to pounce and it looks as though they are close to completing a deal. According to the Daily Star, the Gunners are finalising £25.5 million bid that they will present to Sporting Lisbon and could complete the deal shortly. NEED: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been in desperate need of a defensive midfielder for some time now. The Frenchman re signed Mathieu Flamini last season but his return was only a short term solution, while Mikel Arteta, at 32 years old, falls into the same category. MANCHESTER UNITED INTEREST: Manchester United did add to their midfield ranks over the summer by landing Ander Herrera, although they are seemingly on the lookout for more additions having ben heavily linked with the likes of Arturo Vidal, Kevin Strootman and Marco Reus. Carvalho was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the summer, and was viewed as a cheaper alternative to Sami Khedira who, as things stand at least, is free to walk away from Real Madrid when his contract expires in the summer. BATTLE: Arsenal are currently fifth in the Premier League and Wenger hinted yesterday that he could be on the lookout for a few new signings in the January transfer window. There is a need there [to buy], but the right opportunity has to come up. To buy [just for the sake] to buy is not what we want to do, but if the right opportunity comes up, we will do it. FORM: If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with [Jack] Wilshere, [Aaron] Ramsey and [Mikel] Arteta, were a bit short at the moment in midfield.Arsenal face Southampton on New Years day, while Manchester United take on Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
