Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed Manchester United have made a bid for Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgium international is not guaranteed a first-team place at the Emirates, with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny forming Wengers preferred central-defensive partnership, and wants to move on this summer. Wenger is sympathetic to the 28-year-olds situation and says he will not keep him at the club against his will. He could now be set for a switch to Arsenals Premier League rivals United, although Barcelona are also understood to be circling. Manchester United are part of the group (of bidders), said Wenger. Vermaelen could leave us because he needs to play now. Were in a position where its difficult to stand in his way. Wenger has been active in the transfer market so far, splashing out to bring in the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, and admits more new faces could arrive before the end of the month.
