Arsenal need a new backup keeper NOW! The need for a second Arsenal keeper quickly by Tey We all know the importance of competition within the team. Competition breeds motivation. Motivation to fight for spots in the team and higher wages will only lead to Arsenal benefitting eventually. Healthy competition is key in the success of every great footballing team. Thus, we arrive at a rather sensitive topic – Competition for the no 1 spot. The reason why this is a headache for many managers in the world is because the second fiddle will get very little games. As great as Lukasz Fabianski was, he played a mere 78 times in 7 long years for Arsenal. Being second fiddle to Almunia and then Szczesny, Fabianski was eventually frustrated and left the club for Swansea. This is so as keepers are rarely dropped to ensure familiarity with the back four and keepers are rarely injured. However, as tough as it is, a keeper to challenge Szczesny is extremely vital and cannot be ignored. Arsenal currently has only one available goalkeeper in Szczesny and if he has a poor run of games or gets injured, there is no one to cover him. Also, Szczesny may get complacent as his spot is assured in the team. Rumours have linked Arsenal with Columbian keeper David Ospina and Norwich keeper John Ruddy. Both are solid backups that can handle the task of taking over if Szczesny has any problems. To be honest, I would prefer Ospina as the track record of Ruddy in the premier league isn’t exactly very impressive. However, will Ospina be satisfied with being the second choice? All I know is it wouldn’t be easy for Wenger to convince him. How important is a second keeper to you?
