Arsenal seem to have made a breakthrough in their negotiations with key defender Bacary Sagna. The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season and the Gunners have not hidden their desire to have him extend his stay beyond the expiration of his current contract and Sagna himself has also affirmed his love for the Gunners but both parties haven’t been able to find a common ground with Arsenal offering just a year extension on the same salary while Sagna was holding out for at least a 3 year deal with a significant rise in his weekly pay. According to reports in the Mirror today, Arsenal seems to have buckled by offering Sagna the length he wants, a new 3 year deal. Wenger himself revealed that there was new deal on the table awaiting Sagna’s consent. “He (Sagna) has an offer, he has not come back to us yet.” “I’m confident he will stay but we will accept his decision. No matter what his decision will be, we will accept it and go on with it.” On the rule of offering a year extension to players in their 30s, Wenger revealed that it wasn’t sacrosanct or written in the stones and as such, it could be tinkered with. “Look not for the defenders no. It depends. It’s a general law in our club yes. But after it’s not a stupid law, we look at individual cases and we adapt it to the individuals.” If this development is true then it is certainly a good news and I believe should be enough to get Sagna to commit his future to Arsenal and prove to the moneybags that have been trying to use money to tempt him away from the Emirates that though every player has his price, money cannot afford it all.
