Arsene Wenger is convinced Arsenal are still contenders in this seasons Premier League title race, even though they have fallen nine points behind leaders Chelsea after just nine games. Arsenals latest title challenge appears to be in trouble already with just three wins so far, yet Wenger believes his side can challenge Jose Mourinhos Chelsea for top spot. I have a strong belief we will come back and we just have to prove that on the pitch, said Wenger. I dont write ourselves off. We will let people do it. This [perception that Arsenal are out of the title race] is a little bit linked to mathematics. It does not consider who we played, how many times we play away, what is the quality of team we play against, what kind of missing players you had in the big games. Chelsea is in a strong position at the moment. It is not realistic to think we will catch back Chelsea very quickly. We have to get consistent results to have a chance to come back so I focused on the quality of the game and the consistency of our results before we think about coming back on Chelsea. Whether Chelsea can emulate Arsenals Invincibles, who went the whole of the 2003-04 campaign unbeaten, is another matter for Wenger, though. It is too early [to consider this], Wenger added. There are just nine games played. There is a long way to go. Wenger has already been forced to dismiss comments from centre-back Per Mertesacker that Arsenal are suffering a crisis of confidence . Mertesacker suggested earlier this month that Arsenal need to step up their training regime in order to fix their defensive frailties, but Wenger feels the negativity surrounding his teams start to the season is misplaced. Attitude fantastic, dedication fantastic, but on the efficiency front, we can do better, was Wengers summation of Arsenals efforts so far this season. If you look at the chances we have created, our finishing was not always at the expected level. We give very few chances away, but the chances we have given away are of quality and that is where we have to do better. - #jay
