Art in the Life of Faith (4) “Now therefore write this song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the people of Israel.” Deuteronomy 31:19 The power of pleasure We tend to pay more attention to things that delight us, things that give us pleasure and enjoyment. A pleasing song, a powerful film, a good joke, a handsome suit of clothes. We return to such things over and over, relishing each fresh encounter and experience. This is why, fundamental to God’s purposes in giving us art is its power to bring pleasure to our souls – our minds, hearts, and consciences. If art were not pleasurable, it is doubtful it would be able to fulfill any of the other uses for which God intends it. But because God made us to know pleasure, and the arts delight us in the depths of our souls, they also have power to form our souls in ways consistent with God’s plan to give us a future and a hope (Jer. 29:11). The arts can teach, in other words, and God intends for us to use the whole range of arts that He may instruct us in His truth
