ArtChallenge: Day 4: The Death of the Coral Reef Thank you, Helen Breil and Leila Bidler for nominating me to participate in this wonderful ArtChain started by Donna Greenberg! This is a weird little series that I felt driven to create after reading about the dredging and fracking that is happening by a company with a very bad environmental history off the coast of Australia. There is a serious threat to the Great Barrier Reef, and of course, natural phenomena like the GBR cannot be repaired or replaced with all of the money in the world, so it strikes me as verging on criminal. The first piece is called: Coral Cathedral which is my abstract attempt to capture some of the colors and beauty of the coral; The second piece is Oceans of Blue... the last and final piece is how I might imagine the coral reef if it died - including the failing EKG across the top, and a sun that looks like blood - gruesome, I know, but its how I imagine it. In each, the organ pipes along the bottom are made from PC, the suns are primarily or entirely made from resin; acrylic paint with glass medium is used in Oceans of Blue. These are among my first pieces as I return to being an artist after many ages of being away, so Im still as much a work in progress as my art is... None of these are framed yet, and Im not sure what Im going to do with them exactly. Each measures about 20 x 32 and are shallow 3-D intended for shadow box frames.
