Arthur Cantu I have known Mark since he wrestled my friend Corky in eigth grade. I consider Mark family -he is one of my closest dearest life long friends. I write this so my friends and family understand that the movie is a fictional account and not a true story. Here is what i saw as false or made up stuff by the director 1. The only relationship between John du Pont and Mark Schultz was an employee/employer relationship. Mark considered du Pont the most repulsive person hed ever met. 2. The movie shows Mark as an Olympic Champion, not an Olympic and World Champion, when duPont called. Mark won the 1985 World Title defeating all the wrestlers that boycotted the 1984 Olympics. Mark is the only 1984 Olympic Champion to win the 1985 World Championship. In 1985 Mark also defeated the 1985 World Champion at the weight above him at the U.S. Open in Lock Haven, PA. The movie strips Mark of his 1985 world title. 3. The movie shows Mark getting paid $20 for a speech. Mark did many speeches after winning the 1985 worlds. His fee was $500 or more. 4. Mark never substituted for any of Daves speaking engagements. 5. Dave and Mark were never at Foxcatcher at the same time. Mark left Foxcatcher in 1988, 8 years before the murder. 6. Dave and Nancy moved onto the farm in 1989, a year after Mark left, and stayed there for 7 years before the murder. 7. The first time Mark met duPont he was drunk with dandruff caked on his head and food caked on his teeth. In the movie hes not drunk. Hes clean and wearing a clean white shirt. 8. The movie shows Mark working as Daves assistant at Wexler (a fictional school) and living in his own apartment when duPont called him. In reality Dave and Mark were both living with their father in their fathers house in Palo Alto, CA while both worked as assistant coaches at Stanford. 9. Dave was never a college head college coach. Mark was an NCAA Division I University Head Coach at Brigham Young University for 6 years. Mark was voted 1998 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. 10. The wrestling facility in the movie was real but wasnt built until after Mark left Foxcatcher Farms in 1988. Mark only had access to one mat on the estate in an indoor shooting range. 11. DuPont pointed guns at the wrestlers but never fired a gun in his gym. 12. The movie shows Dave negotiating a deal to pay Mark if hes not at Foxcatcher. Mark was the one who negotiated the deal to pay the brothers the same salary regardless of who worked there. 13. Foxcatcher portrays Mark as stupid. He was the 1983 Senior Student Athlete of the Year at Oklahoma University. He has a masters degree. 14. Mark didnt go to Team Foxcatcher to work as du Ponts assistant or coach for du Pont. He took a job to be the assistant coach at Villanova University which was about 20 minute drive to Foxcatcher Farms in Newtown Square, PA. 15. du Pont told Mark that du Pont would only come to Villanova about once every 3 months. Thats why Mark agreed to coach at Villanova. 16. The movie shows Mark moving from an apartment in Wisconsin directly onto Foxcatcher Farms in Newtown Square, PA. When he moved to PA he rented an apartment in Rosemont near Villanova University, a 20 minute drive to Foxcatcher farms. 17. Mark never showed wrestling technique to du Pont. 18. Mark never sat in duPonts corner in any matches. 19. In the movie it shows Mark and duPont practicing together in “the gallery” in duPonts house. There was no mats in duPonts house or room called the gallery. 20. Mark didnt frost his hair. 21. Dave didnt come into Marks hotel room after he lost in Pensacola. 22. DuPont didnt try to see Mark when he cut 12 lbs in 90 minutes. 23. UFC IX was a NHB fight in Detroits Cobo Arena with a crowd of 10,000. Not a circus side show cage fight. Marks opponent was black Canadian. In the movie hes a white Russian. 24. DuPont never gave Mark a speech to read at the awards banquet duPont would set up for himself. 25. In the movie duPont hands Mark a speech to read at an award banquet where he reads that duPont was the father hes been looking for. DuPont never gave Mark a speech to read or consider duPont a coach, leader, or father figure. Mark is very close with his father Phil. 26. Mark didnt go to the 1987 Worlds with duPont in a lear jet. 27. Dave didnt coach Mark at the 1987 Worlds. 28. duPont and Mark were never on a poster together. Mark was on a Team Foxcatcher poster by himself. 29. Mark never gave duPont his medals to stick in a trophy room. He kept his medals in storage. 30. DuPont never gave Mark any ornithology books he wrote. 31. The movie shows UFC VIII on TV in 1988. The UFC started in 1993. UFC VIII was in 1996. 32. duPont never slapped Mark. 33. Mark and duPont never went to Valley Forge together. 34. Mark dated several girls while at Villanova / Foxcatcher. 35. According to their parents Dave and Mark were so similar in personality and technique they were almost like twins. There is more; this though should at least let people know the movie is not a true story
