Article by Health Revelations Take a step to protect your knees When youre battling creaky knees, the last thing you want to do is walk. I understand that. Youre in so much pain you dont even want to get out of your chair -- and thats exactly why some 80 percent of arthritis patients limit their movements. Buck the trend on this one, because a daily walk is actually one of the best ways to fight the pain, slow the progression and ensure you dont suffer from the disability that often accompanies knee osteoarthritis. One new study finds that every 1,000 steps a day you walk can reduce your functional limitations by between 16 percent and 18 percent. But dont stop with 1,000 steps. Thats hardly a walk at all, even for someone battling the crippling pain of arthritis. If you want some real benefits, you need to move even more -- and some of the biggest benefits of all go to patients who get at least 6,000 steps per day, according to the new study in the journal Arthritis Care & Research. Of course, its easy for me to write this. Im not the one in pain. My own patients doubt me when I tell them they need to move more -- but then they do it, and they feel the difference for themselves. And you can, too. In some cases youll need more than a walk -- you may need the help of natural anti-inflammatory supplements as well as glucosamine and chondroitin. And if youre still in pain, you dont need to resign yourself to a knee replacement surgery. Youve got another option to try first. Its a cutting-edge treatment called platelet rich plasma in which your own platelets are extracted from your blood in a centrifuge and then injected into your knee to stimulate healing.
