Article en Anglais par Ali Sultan (Afar action alliance) Can the Afar Speak for Themselves ? The Afar have been on the long road towards democracy since 1991. Their efforts were to improve dignity, freedom and basic human rights, an endeavor that can never be undervalued. The Afar have always been peaceful and inclusive towards their neighbors. When speaking of the Afar historically they have been a much suffered people. A recent a troubling development in Djibouti that former pro government supporters are now at the lead of opposition groups. They have tried to paint themselves saviors as the leading faction for change towards democracy and reform but they are not. There are indeed people who are concerned with Djibouti’s future such as the youth, we must not throw these people in the same basket as the supposed reformers. These young people want a true ability for self-expression and dignity. When people begin to speak out and use their voice the world hears them and sympathies. We must continue to support and validate these idealist young people as much as possible as it is our duty. Changes are coming in Djibouti , this is known. What is not known is which ideals with come through this is why it is vital that all of us are behind the right parties. The Afar have suffered too much for too long to slide backwards and have progress towards representative democracy undone. No is the time to stand up and give our voice to theirs.
