Article written by Judy Siegel, Ph.D, Longevity Training Center, Avon, CT. I HATE BLUEBERRIES PERHAPS “HATE” IS TOO STRONG A WORD, BUT I DISLIKE THEM. I DON’T EAT THEM. I DON’TCARE IF THEY ARE LOADED WITH POLYPHENOLS, FLAVENOIDS. I KNOW THEY ARE GOOD FOR US BUT I’M STILL NOT GOING TO EAT THEM. I COULD LIST, AND MANY PEOPLE HAVE, THE VALUABLE CHEMISTRY HIDING IN FRUITS, VEGETABLES, WHOLE GRAINS, DAIRY PRODUCTS, LEAN MEATS, FISH. BUT MOST OF US DON’T EAT SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE IT IS GOOD FOR US. (ALTHOUGH, I DO REMEMBER MY FATHER NOT ALLOWING ME TO LEAVE THE TABLE UNTIL I HAD FINISHED MY BRUSSEL SPROUTS.) I COULD NOT EAT SOMETHING, EVEN THOUGH I REALLY DO ENJOY IT ON THE BASIS THAT IT IS NOT GOOD FOR ME—DOUGHNUTS AND POTATO CHIPS COME TO MIND, WITH A LONG LIST FOLLOWING. BAD FOOD TASTES REALLY GOOD IT TURNS OUT. SO, HOW DO I DECIDE WHAT TO EAT—TV, BOOKS, MAGAZINES ARE SO CONFUSING? I CHOOSE FOODS ON THE BASIS OF VERY BROAD, SIMPLE STROKES. ALL FRUITS AND VEGETABLE HAVE REALLY GOOD CHEMISTRY WAITING TO SERVE ME. I TAUGHT MY SELF, OVER A LONG TIME, TO PREFER WHOLE GRAINS INSTEAD OF WHITE STUFF—MORE FLAVOR AND, IT TURNS OUT, MORE REAL B VITAMINS INSTEAD OF GROUND UP VITAMIN PILLS IN THE WHITE DOUGH. LEAN MEATS ARE LESS LIKELY TO CAUSE ME (OR YOU) STOMACH DISTRESS, SO I EAT MOSTLY CHICKEN IN THE SUMMER. STEWS CAN USE LOW FAT BEEF WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS COLDER. DAIRY IS MILK IN MY CEREAL AND COFFEE, MY LUNCHTIME YOGURT, AND MY NIGHTTIME ICE CREAM. YES, IT’S LOW FAT. TO MAKE SURE I’M NOT OVER-EATING THESE GOOD THINGS, I STAND ON THE SCALE—DAILY. SO, SHOP THE OUTSIDE WALLS OF THE SUPERMARKET WHERE ITS REFRIGERATED. TAKE HOME RAW NAKED FOOD FOR A HEALTHY U, WITHOUT THE NEED FOR BIOCHEMISTRY AND ADVANCED STATISTICS. KISS PRINCIPLE.
