Artist: Maggie Bjorklund Album: Shaken (2014) Denmark’s Maggie Bjorklund penned this album while attending to her mother’s final days in a hospital, and fittingly it’s full haunting, murky and hazy moods that fit the poetic, terse storytelling perfectly. Bjorklund’s inimitable pedal steel is often at the forefront of the songs, though she’s assembled an all star cast to help her out on both sound and voice (Calexico, Lambchop, Portishead), as she rumbles through warm, Americana landscapes in a very ghostly, emotionally gripping album. While she might be better known as Jack White’s guitarist, if there’s any justice this cathartic album should position her as a first rate songstress and powerful front woman.
