Artists have been at the forefront of human right advocacy for generations. AHRA believes that in reflecting the lived experience, art and artists can inform, educate and inspire people in profoundly positive ways. Moreover, AHRA believes that contemporary artists have a responsibility to express, empower and advocate for those living in hardship and struggling to realise their fundamental freedoms. The connection is clear; as a form of expression, Art requires the fulfilment of fundamental rights in order to flourish. Guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, AHRA seeks to promote work that positively reinterprets issues and experiences for the purposes of building social consciousness and lasting social change. AHRA aims to raise human rights awareness by harnessing the creative energies of artists. Working with a variety of like-minded partners, it also links student artists with innovative campaign opportunities and experiences. A work of art encountered is an experience, not a statement or an answer to a question. Art is not about something; it is something. A work of art exists in the world, not just as text or a commentary on the world. A work of art makes us comprehend something singular. - Susan Sonta
