Arundhatie Biswas Kundal an independent consultant specialised on gender and children related issues in the sub-continent, currently on an assignment with UNICEF Gujarat. She attended the European Union Visitors Programme (EUVP) in June 2014 and heres what she feels able the study tour – I undertook this tour at a critical juncture when India ushered in a new government and were to be followed by the second biggest elections in the world, when the European Parliament of 751 members were to be elected. Interactions with professionals across various departments reflected the same ideals for the biggest democracies in the world, where elections represent core beliefs in the freedom of choice, human rights and a market economy which has stood the test of time and conflict. This innovative exercise called the EUVP is not just an ordinary journey but a sincere venture to get the best minds to understand the intuitions of the EU and its networks. It was quite clear from the programme that the EU is not just India’s largest trading partner but also an ally in addressing the threats to global peace and security. I felt that India and the EU, as diverse as they are, need to perhaps rework their shared fundamental objectives and commit to a clear cut common agenda with specific goals. I am hopeful that with a new government in place the two most dynamic and prolific democracies will come together to significantly contribute towards fostering sustainable development, human rights, peace and stability. It was a truly enriching and invigorating experience and a brilliant exposure for professionals, academics and students alike.
