As 2013 draws to a close, and our slow slide into cultural - TopicsExpress

As 2013 draws to a close, and our slow slide into cultural irrelevancy continues, I sometimes wonder what the point of the mix is in modern internet culture. With so many being made by so wide a variety of artists, musicians, producers, bloggers, teenagers, celebrities, and last but not least myself, has the mixtape become just another form of noise on the internet? A go-to post for weary, worn-down music zine editors who wish that theyd just nutted up and tried to go pro? Click-bait? Who knows. But it is with this in mind that I give you this Wintry Mix as an experience, a story told with other peoples words and feelings. Below, youll find an hour-long radio show (no talking), punctuated by selections from Sufjan Stevens tone poem Michigan, my number 2 record for 2013 (#1 has been, and always will be, occupied by Destroyers Kaputt) and a lovely piece in its own right that encapsulates the feeling of winter in America. So put on your headphones, turn out the lights. Enjoy a few cookies from grandmas cookie platter. Go for a drive past the beer distributors or a walk in the snow downtown. Think about the cliched beauty and hope and sadness and wonder that marks the end of each calendar year. Escape for a moment from the Christmas around you, to the one in your dreams. xo Brendan 1.
