As Bangalore prepares to greet Haile Gebrselassie, heres an interesting anecdote when I crossed the path of the legend. On 30 September, 2007, Hailie had set a marathon world record of 2:04:26 in Berlin. So starting in 2008, Dubai Holding Company held out a deal. Anyone breaking Hailie’s record in Dubai would get a bonus $1m, in addition to the first prize. The offer was valid for 2008, 2009 and 2010 marathons. Hopes were soaring that Haile himself would break his record in Dubai. In Jan 2010, even as I finished my Dubai 10K, Haile was dashing towards the full marathon finish line. I was lucky to get that rare photograph, for that was the last run (finish) of the legend. That same year in NY, Haile retired. Did he win the additional $ 1m ?
