As Cambodia seems to be indicating that a deal has been done with Australia to settle refugees there (currently still denied by Scott Morrison) we draw your attention to this from the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) : RCOA raised serious concerns about the safety of any refugees liable to be sent to Cambodia under a resettlement deal being considered by the Australian Government. In a statement, RCOA CEO Paul Power said any deal by Australia to send recognised refugees from Nauru to Cambodia would ignore significant human rights concerns in a country that has a history of forcibly returning refugees to persecution. Despite being one of the few countries in the Asia-Pacific region to sign the Refugee Convention, Cambodia was responsible for some of the most blatant breaches of the Convention in Asia, the statement said. Mr Power said any deal to resettle refugees in Cambodia would be another shameful example of Australia abusing its privilege and influence within the Asia-Pacific region at a time when it should be at the forefront of measures to lead a regional movement towards a more effective sharing of responsibility for the protection of refugees. “Forcing refugees, unwanted by Australia, on to some of the poorest nations in the Asia-Pacific region is not only deeply cynical but undermines any long-term efforts to build the trust required between nations to develop a fairer sharing of responsibility,” the statement said. refugeecouncil.org.au/n/mr/140430_Cambodia.pdf
