As Congressmember Gary Miller returns to the nation’s Capitol on - TopicsExpress

As Congressmember Gary Miller returns to the nation’s Capitol on September 9th, following the summer recess, a coalition of local business, labor, civil rights, and community groups will demand he push House leaders to put immigration reform with a path to citizenship at the top of their agenda for action this session. A news conference in Colton will be one of eleven across California, where a broad coalition of unusual allies call on house members to “Get back to work” on a comprehensive immigration reform bill that is critical to the nation’s economy. “Our family owned business was started by my parents who were immigrants and became citizens. We’ve been in business for 48 years and understand that our current immigration system is broken,” said Carmen Cervantes of La Carreta Mexican Style Products. “When Congress gets back to work, they need to work to pass comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship for our families, our communities and our economy.” At Monday’s event, the coalition will release new data that shows immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship will provide a $711 million dollar annual boost to the Inland Empire economy by creating jobs, improving the real estate market, and supporting local businesses. The U.S. Senate has passed legislation that would help local communities and our local economies flourish by drawing on the skills, talents, and economic input of every Californian. But House Republican leaders have so far ignored the strong majority of Americans, including both Republicans and Democrats, who support a comprehensive approach, refusing to bring a reform bill forward for a vote. Locally, businesses have signed a letter to Congress supporting immigration reform with a path to citizenship, noting the current system fails to provide stability for families and businesses alike, and many are displaying a poster to make their support for immigration reform with a path to citizenship visible.
