As Election Day approaches, I would like to set the record - TopicsExpress

As Election Day approaches, I would like to set the record straight on a couple things that you may have been hearing from one of my opponents. I have not commented on the negativity of this campaign but feel that it is important that you, the voter have facts not falsehoods. First off, the Sheriff has more constitutional duties than any other elected official in the state but raising taxes is not one of them. That job belongs to County Commissioners. As your sheriff, I have worked very diligently to operate within our existing budget by prioritizing our use of tax dollars to meet the growing public safety demands on this agency. The Sheriff’s Office, like many other county offices, we have dealt with our growth very conservatively and within our current budget constraints. As the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of this county, my primary constitutional duty is to ensure the safety of our citizens. I have not and will not ask the county commission for any more tax dollars than I need to carry out that duty as safely and efficiently as possible. When the time comes and we need additional funding to meet our public safety needs, I will present the necessary data and request those additional funds from the county commission. The county commission will decide whether or not to fund that request within the current tax base or with new tax dollars. I will not compromise your safety to save a dollar. Secondly, the Sheriff’s office is not “heavy in command staff”. We have 339 employees who are constitutionally and statutorily responsible for much more than the traditional law enforcement agency. Our employees are managed by 14 command staff members leaving us at a 24/1 employee/command staff ratio which is fewer than most agencies our size. The job description and responsibilities of our command staff are well defined and cover the administrative, statutory, and constitutional duties of this office. I give you this information so that you are well informed about the facts as they are and not how they have been falsely presented. My opponent will do whatever he can to tarnish my reputation in order to receive your vote. The only thing that I can ask the voters of this county to do is to research the information that you are given and make an informed decision when you go to the polls. You will find that what I am telling you is true and that I care for nothing but what is best for the safety and security of our county. I would appreciate your vote on August 7th. The only promise that I can make is to continue providing the most professional law-enforcement service possible while conserving your tax dollars, without compromising your safety. Sincerely, Sheriff John Fuson
