As I celebrate the 45th anniversary of my familys arrival to the US, I cant help but reflect on how much the immigration process has changed! My father migrated in November of 1968 and a year later our mother and four of his children were reunited with him in Boston. Eventually, our brother Robert Avila joined us leaving only one sister in Honduras. Today families wait years and many risk their lives crossing the border to reunite! On the other hand, I always quote my beloved late father who motivated us to become naturalized US Citizens because as he put it The day will come when the only persons the USA will not deport, will be its citizens! Talk about vision and wisdom! Eventually all the children married and procreated the first generation of Honduran-American Avilas such as Adrienne C A Mitchell, Jessica Avila, To Mmy, Levi Levy, D.j. Av, Robin Avila, Jasmine Avila, Anah Avila-Acloque, Tomas Avila, Jr., Francis Garcia, Avery Norman, Robert Morris and my late nephews William and Gary Stanton. Two of my nieces, Ana Perkins and Leslie Garcia were born in Honduras and migrated at an early age. Today many of that generation are parents of the second generation Honduran-Americans! Yes the United States of America is indeed a nation of immigrants and I am blessed and proud to be a member of that Melting Pot or Salad Bowl! God Bless America!
