As I continue my research on my Prudence Crandall book, I am reminded that I have spelled the end of nature through my independence and questing after power. This from a book by Edwin Hubbell Chapin, a Universalist preacher, entitled _Duties of Young Women_ (Boston 1856). It states that if women abandoned the home for “political life, speculation, and debate...there would be a dying out of nature, a dropping away of that mysterious, inexpressible love, that unseen magnetism which refines the elements of social life and brings them together.” Wow. A dying out of nature. My Catholic upbringing assures me that this whole mess - global climate change, species extinction, etc. - it is all my fault. As I suspected.
