As I get ready to prepare dinner and relax on the porch to the rumble of thunder I thought I would share this totally amazing video from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. And it is for real. Ive watched herons swallow small fish, frogs and snakes and go after meadow voles on dry land at my Independence Oaks, Rose Oaks and Highland Oaks County Parks, but wow, this heron likes really big gulps. The USFW edited the sequence down to the 3 minutes but it took this great blue heron 11 minutes to swallow. I bet he had trouble lumbering into flight after this meal! And the spear, adjust and position and then swallow sequence is set to music! :)
