As I had reported earlier my mother was taken to the E.R. Sunday - TopicsExpress

As I had reported earlier my mother was taken to the E.R. Sunday evening saying she was having a problem with her implantable cardioverter- defibrillator (ICD). Test have shown there is a problem with the ICD and maybe a lead. She was scheduled to have it replaced in the morning. However the O.R. was backed up so the procedure has been re-scheduled for Thursday. She also is allergic to shell fish so she has to be medicated so the iodine she is injected with won’t affect her. The iodine is used so they can view the veins and leads. If the leads are bad then they may have to use a laser (which was used on me) to open the vein and remove and replace the lead(s). If it’s just the ICD the procedure will take about 2 hrs. If it’s the leads as well it can be up to 8 hrs. Thank you everyone for your prayer and kind thoughts. (An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a small battery-powered electrical impulse generator that is implanted in patients who are at risk of sudden cardiac death due to ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. The device is programmed to detect cardiac arrhythmia and correct it by delivering a jolt of electricity. In current variants, the ability to revert ventricular fibrillation has been extended to include both atrral and ventricular arrhythmias. There also exists the ability to perform biventricular pacing in patients with congestive heart failure or bradycardia.)
