As I have for the past 2 Christmases, I am drawn today to highlight a song that best captures for me the complexity and the beauty of Rebecca Lord, a Baptist by birth and upbringing, a Jew by choice and attitude. This year, the original version of the song by the Chieftains, with Jackson Browne on vocals. When I feel Rebeccas absence most acutely these days is when I look at the enormous problems of race and class and economic inequality that we face as a society. As much as she would have contributed to the conversation on an intellectual level - as a historian, a political actor and an activist - what I miss most is her calm, her serenity and her ability to inspire and encourage others. With all that has transpired in the world recently, I think we could all use some of that inspiration right now.
