As I indicated earlier, Teddye Snell is embarking upon a three-part series about higher education compensation for administrators, and their contrast to the average Okie, elected officials here, and most especially, professors. Note that while most profs have (or are working on) terminal degrees, were learning many college admins have only bachelors degrees. To help Teddye with this series, we need your thoughts. Please read, and weigh in: Gov. Mary Fallin’s base annual salary is $147,000. Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb’s salary is $114,713. Oklahoma legislators’ base annual salary – excluding per diem – is $38,400 (they are in session about four months a year). The average annual base salary of a university president in Oklahoma (there are 11) is $216,290.04. As examples, NSU President Steve Turner earns $222,000; UCO President Don Betz earns $279,000 (both have terminal degrees). Keep in mind these amounts/averages do not include university-provided housing or vehicles. Contrast that with the per capital annual personal income for Oklahomans in general, which is about $39,000. Do you think administrators are overpaid? Underpaid? Should they have to have the same education as professors? Should there be such a discrepancy between the pay for taxpayer-funded jobs, and those for private business?
