As I lay in bed petting my dog Toby and rubbing his tummy I think - TopicsExpress

As I lay in bed petting my dog Toby and rubbing his tummy I think about how lucky he is. We rescued him from a shelter and brought him home to a cozy house where he lounges around, eats organic food, enjoys tummy rubs and long hikes and gets plenty of love and affection. And he is so smart. Sometimes it amazes me how intelligent he really is. But I doubt he would last two days in a factory farm. Then I think about the average pig whos even smarter than Toby yet lives in the most hostile environment one can imagine. Pigs, when they are just babies, get castrated, have their tails docked and their teeth cut...all without painkillers. They live their short lives in overcrowded confined spaces wallowing in their own excrement. If they are mothers they live in a crate so small they cant even turn around and get impregnated over and over until their miserable lives are ended for cheap ham. When the time comes they are jammed into transport trucks for sometimes up to 24 hours with no heat or air conditioning and taken to the slaughterhouse. Then the nightmare really begins! There is no way Toby would survive. And many pigs dont either. Most of our pets are very lucky to live the lives they live. But what about these other animals? Ahhh yes....people cant live without bacon. I wish folks would reexamine just what they really need in life and consider the feelings and respect the lives of others.
