As I promised yesterday, I want to share some facts about the Mauritius education system. Their system is similar to ours, having both been colonies of the British. We know that we have a crisis with our education system with most public schools registering poor results in Botswana while Mauritian students consistently rank top in the world each year for the Cambridge International O Levels Exams. I have chosen some areas of interest as stated below 1. In Mauritius education is compulsory up to the age of 16. In Botswana education is not compulsory. 2. Education is free in Mauritius for pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary. In Botswana we have school fees for primary and secondary and a loan system for university. 3. Mauritius has pre-primary schools for children as young as 3 years and the schools have a student teacher ration of 1 teacher to 13 students. Botswana has no government owned pre-primary schools. 4. In Mauritius English and French are compulsory. They then have a long list of languages that they call ancestral languages that are taught in different schools and include (Arabic, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Mandarin,Sankrit,Tamil,Telugu and Urdu). In Botswana schools only teach in Setswana and English, no other local language is used. 5. The student teacher ratio for Primary schools in Mauritius is 1:27 and for secondary its 1:15. Most schools in Botswana have an average of 1:40 teacher student ratio. With all of the above, while no single secondary school registered a pass rate of over 50%, in Mauritius the average pass rate for Cambridge Higher School Certificate is 78%. The facts speak for themselves. The BCP proposals for pre-primary schools, free and compulsory education, introduction of mother tongue and reducing the teacher pupil ratio produces good results. We are Ready to Lead in the field of education...
